fall in the park

FEAR can keep you from making positive changes that you know would be good for you. It’s okay to feel the fear; we all do at some time in our lives but don’t let it immobilize you.

Feel the fear…then push it aside and do what you need to do any way. You’ll stretch and grow or you can choose to stay where you are and be comfortable and stagnate.

I had a fear of talking in front of groups of people. I grew up a shy person and I hated it! I was the student in the class who knew the answer but was afraid to raise her hand. I was the girl at the party who hid in the corner, holding up the wall, plus at the age of 11 an accident left me with a burn and scar on the side of my face. The cruel kids at school called me scar-face which added to the shyness.

Writing was my passion. I kept journals, wrote poems and short stories. I ached to stand in front of an audience and share my work, but I couldn’t. The thought terrified me. Even in college I found ways to escape speaking in front of the class; however that worked against me when participation was a percentage of the grade.

Many years later I shared a poem with a good friend and told him of my fear of speaking in front of groups. He was a videographer for a television station and boy was he funny, outgoing and a wiz at making people comfortable in front of a camera. He became my coach, videotaping me as I read poetry and other writings. When I felt silly and uncomfortable he pointed out my progress, always encouraging and inspiring me to reach my potential.

For a birthday gift he paid for me to attend a Dale Carnegie public speaking course. I was amazed to see how many successful professionals shared my fear.
With a lot of work and determination, the fear began to lose its grip on me; I put myself in situations forcing me to express myself in front of groups. It was a challenge.
I applied the “fake it till you make it” mantra and it worked. Shyness and the fear of speaking in front of others had kept me in a prison without bars. Eventually the fear was put to rest  and along with it, shyness.

I made a change and the change changed my life! Don’t procrastinate another day. If there is something you need to do to better your quality of life, feel the fear and take action anyway!

Are You Ready To Make a Choice?

Happy or sad.

Love or hate.

Optimistic or pessimistic.

Grateful or unappreciative.

Holding on to baggage or taking it to the dump.

Living with passion & a purpose or just existing.

In control of your life or being controlled by circumstances.

How’s life’s journey going so far? Is there anything you’d like to change … another path you’d like to take?
The great thing is that we’re  responsible for our own lives and therefore have the power to change the path we’re traveling.
Sometimes… F.E.A.R. (False Expectations Appearing Real) creeps in and it feels safer to do nothing…but I’ve learned to feel the fear and do it anyway! (the name of a great book I read years ago) I take little steps…like testing the pool water before plunging in for a swim.

Each day we get a little older and the reality is that none of us will get out of this world alive! So…hmm…do you want to live it striving for passion and purpose or are you content to just exist day-to-day …year to year? I’ve decided to shoot for the stars and maybe …just maybe, I’ll at least land on the moon!

We are all blessed with a gift…a talent …something we’re to share with the world… Are you ready to make your presence known?

Depression…will have you existing behind a veil of darkness. Slowly, killing your dreams and goals…

Over 20 years ago I overdosed on prescription pain medications and over the counter drugs, ironically I was a nurse on the psychiatric unit of a hospital. I was great at taking care of others while my own baggage was becoming too much to bear.

When I awoke in an emergency room I knew I had hit the bottom of the black hole that had been haunting me… That end was my beginning of a journey to claim my life of passion and purpose that I deserved to have.

Since that time I have dedicated myself to helping educate others on depression; prevention and resources for help.

Extremely important, is breaking the stigma connected to depression that keeps many people from reaching out for the help they need.

Depression does not discriminate. It doesn’t care about the color of your skin, your age, how many degrees you have or how much money you have in the in the bank. Look around you…Many people wear mask to hide what they’re feeling, after all…what would happen if you knew?

My book…Depression Free… A Wise Woman’s Guide to Healing and Happiness shares my story and offers great tools for creating positive life changes.

“We all have one life to live and one chance to live it. Do it well and with purpose!

Hey God…Can I Get a Do Over?

Well the answer was a resounding “No!” I was just thinking that with the wisdom we’ve acquired over the years …what if we could go back and make just a few changes… how cool would that be?…But I get it…no do overs!
What we can do though, is use the wisdom we’ve gained to make better choices. Be aware that the clock is always ticking and we never get our time back…So, do we really want to waste time…

1.Being angry and distant with someone you really care about. How would you feel if you received a phone call that informed you that he/she had died? It happens.
2.Allowing other people to control your life. You live in the shadow of someone else’s dream instead of bringing yours to life.
3.Surrounding yourself with people who don’t support you and your aspirations.
4.Your fear of failure keeping you from nurturing your gift. Read bio’s on successful people and see their struggles before their successes.
5.Hating your Ex. Putting energy into that compromises your emotional and physical health. Life does go on and there is happiness when you let go and open up for it.
6.Time doing busy work when you could use it for introspection. Put yourself on the priority list.
7.Complaining…I can guarantee you that on your bad day pick up a newspaper and you’ll find someone in a worse predicament…. Find the blessings to be grateful for, hey…if you’re reading this blog you can read, see, and have access to a device to view it on!
8. Some of us have become addicted to our electronics and are losing touch with the priceless things in our lives, like human conversations, and connection with our family near or far. Nothing replaces the sound of a welcoming human voice or touch.
9.Feelings of depression. Please… Take your life back..Get help!
10.Waiting for a dysfunctional relationship / situation to change when you know in your heart that it isn’t. We always have options.

If any of these time killers turn on a light bulb for you…please share your comment with me!

Hi There! For my previously dedicated followers,  I deeply apologize for my disappearing act. And for my new visitors, WELCOME, and I hope you come back!

Over 20 years ago I went through a bout with depression.  Me…a nurse! In fact, ironically, I was working on the psychiatric unit at a hospital at the time; doing a good job of taking care of everyone but myself! One weekend I overdosed on prescription and over the counter medications; luckily I awoke in an emergency room instead of on the side of the unknown!

That day, I had two options.  One would be to lay there at the bottom of my dark hole I had been spiraling down for months and just disconnect from the world. I had seen many patients check out from reality and live quietly in their own private bubble. No worries, no stuff to deal with. Option 2, was that I would begin to confront the pain and disappointments in my life, and start peeling the layers off until I got to a place where I could see a glimmer of hope for myself.  I happily chose the latter, and am a witness that we can change our lives!

This past March my two friends and I embarked on a 7 day cruise to the Caribbean to have some real ME time for ourselves.  It was blissful!

The cool thing was that from the time our ship departed until it came back to the home port our cell phones were off and no one brought lap tops.  No texts to read, no calls to return…no emails to check. I frankly didn’t know I could survive without checking messages!

Though we spent a lot of time together we also spent time in our own space. For me it was a perfect time for introspection. Was I following my own spiritual path? Was I waking up each day passionate about what I was doing with my life…where I was, and where I still wanted to go?

I was pretty happy with my answers.  My life needs tweaking but I’m definitely on the right path. I have learned to love and trust God and myself.  The passion I’m blessed to wake up to every morning is to do more…do better, and make a positive difference in the world!

I stood on the balcony of our room that last morning mesmerized by a beautiful sunrise over a vast blue ocean…in awe of God’s art…things that money can’t buy.

We all have one life and one chance to live it.  Do it well and on purpose!

Sick and Tired of Being Sick and Tired!

There is a story that I heard many years ago from author and motivational speaking, Les Brown; who I was honored to meet and get a picture with back in 1995…

I was walking down the street and happened to see a man sitting on his porch. Next to the man was his dog who was whining and whimpering. I asked the man “What’s wrong with your dog” The man said “He’s laying on a nail”. I asked “Laying on a nail? Well why doesn’t he get up?” The man then replied “It’s not hurting bad enough”

I love this story! How often do we whine…whimper and complain about something but never do anything about it! A job you hate, bad relationships, depression, Incomplete goals?

Well I woke up this morning guilty of that myself! I was sick and tired of being sick and tired of complaining about a certain thing and jumped out of bed and decided that today was the day that I was going to get my butt off of that nail and create the change I needed to move forward!

This is a Great day! Counting  blessings and have an attitude of gratitude!

Are YoU sitting on a nail today? Are you sick and tired of being sick and tired of not getting what you desire from life; just not bad enough to seek and implement the change you need to give you what you need and want to be happy?

You know the saying…

“Crazy is repeating the same thing and expecting a different result”  or  “Do nothing and you will be guaranteed to get nothing!”

Why not make this the day that YoU decide your tired of sitting on that rusty old nail…Ouch!

Life is change. Growth is optional. Choose wisely.

You are the script writer for the movie of your life!

How is it going so far? Is there anything you would like to change? Is there another direction you want it to take?

The great thing is that since YoU are incharge and responsible for your life YoU have the power to change the script! Sometimes we know that we need to change it but F.E.A.R. False Expectations Appearing Real gets in the way and puts us in freeze mode.

Feel the fear but do it anyway! (the name of a great book I read years ago) Take little steps…like testing the pool water before you plunging in for a swim.

You‘ll find that the more you do the more confident you get …the more confident you get the more you will do!

Each day you get a little older and the reality is that no one gets out of this world alive! So…do you want to live it with purpose and passion or just exist? Do you want to be extraordinary or ordinary?

Are you going nurture and use the talents and gifts God gave you or let them die from starvation?

Yes! Life is a challenge but nothing worth having or doing comes easy, so armour yourself with faith in your higher power, confidence in yourself and  supportive people then fasten your seat belt and be ready for the ride!

Your script…Your movie!  5..4..3..2..1.. Roll it!
